How to manage pain after eye surgery?

< 1 min read

Mild discomfort after eye surgery is normal, but severe pain should always be discussed with your surgical team.

Typical post-surgery discomfort

Most patients describe aching, scratchiness, or a foreign-body sensation. This usually improves over the first few days.

  • Paracetamol is often enough for mild to moderate pain
  • Lubricating drops or ointment can ease surface soreness
  • Resting with eyes closed and avoiding bright light may help
  • Always follow any specific pain-relief advice in your discharge leaflet

When pain is not normal

Sudden, severe, or worsening pain can signal complications. Prompt assessment is essential to rule out infection or pressure problems.

  • Contact your eye unit urgently if pain does not improve with simple painkillers
  • Seek immediate help if pain is accompanied by vision loss, nausea, or vomiting
  • Do not self-prescribe extra strong pain medicines without medical advice
  • Continue using your prescribed drops exactly as directed
