Mild discomfort after eye surgery is normal, but severe pain should always be discussed with your surgical team.
Typical post-surgery discomfort
Most patients describe aching, scratchiness, or a foreign-body sensation. This usually improves over the first few days.
- Paracetamol is often enough for mild to moderate pain
- Lubricating drops or ointment can ease surface soreness
- Resting with eyes closed and avoiding bright light may help
- Always follow any specific pain-relief advice in your discharge leaflet
When pain is not normal
Sudden, severe, or worsening pain can signal complications. Prompt assessment is essential to rule out infection or pressure problems.
- Contact your eye unit urgently if pain does not improve with simple painkillers
- Seek immediate help if pain is accompanied by vision loss, nausea, or vomiting
- Do not self-prescribe extra strong pain medicines without medical advice
- Continue using your prescribed drops exactly as directed
