How to clean around the eye safely?

< 1 min read

Gentle cleaning around the eye after surgery helps reduce crusting and infection risk without disturbing healing tissues.

Safe cleaning technique

Use only the method and products recommended by your surgical team. Usually this involves cooled boiled water or sterile wipes.

  • Wash hands thoroughly before touching the area
  • Use a clean cotton pad for each wipe, moving from nose outward
  • Avoid rubbing directly on the eyelid margin or stitches
  • Do not let tap water or soap enter the eye itself

How often to clean and when to stop

Cleaning is typically needed most in the first few days as discharge and drops build up. As healing progresses, less cleaning is usually required.

  • Follow the written schedule provided after surgery
  • Stop and seek advice if cleaning becomes painful or causes bleeding
  • Do not share cloths, pads, or towels with others
  • Continue prescribed drops exactly as instructed after cleaning
