What is DSAEK

Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty DSAEK replaces the back layer of the cornea with a slightly thicker donor disc. The tissue is positioned through a small incision and often held by an air or gas bubble.

Because the front surface is mostly untouched recovery is usually smoother than with full thickness grafts. However careful drop use and positioning remain essential.

First weeks after surgery

Vision is often quite blurred initially particularly while the bubble is large. Light sensitivity and foreign body sensation are common.

  • Gradual visual improvement over several weeks
  • Need to avoid rubbing or pressing on the eye
  • Regular steroid and antibiotic eye drops
