DMEK transplant recovery is often quicker than traditional full thickness grafts but still needs patience. Clear guidance helps you protect the delicate new endothelial layer.
What is DMEK
Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty DMEK replaces only the innermost corneal layer. A very thin donor membrane is floated into place often supported by an air or gas bubble.
This targeted approach keeps most of your own cornea in place. It can give sharper vision and faster healing if the graft attaches well.
Early recovery and positioning
In the first days you may be asked to lie on your back for set periods. This keeps the bubble pressing the graft gently against your cornea.
- Blurred vision at first improving as the bubble shrinks
- Mild discomfort or light sensitivity
- Use of frequent steroid and antibiotic drops
- Avoid lying face down or heavy lifting until advised
