Can I swim after SMILE?

< 1 min read

Swimming after SMILE should be avoided until the cornea has healed and infection risk is lower. Your surgeon will give personalised timing.

Pools and Hot Tubs

Chlorine and microbes can irritate healing eyes.

  • Swimming pools and hot tubs are commonly avoided for at least 1-2 weeks.
  • When you return, wear snug, watertight goggles to keep water away from the eyes.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes after swimming; rinse gently with clean water if needed.
  • Use lubricating drops afterwards to soothe any irritation.

Open Water and Water Sports

Sea, lakes, and contact water sports may require a longer delay.

  • Natural water carries variable bacteria and debris, so extra caution is sensible.
  • Protective eyewear is strongly recommended once you resume.
  • Discuss competition or high‑impact water sports at follow‑up visits for tailored advice.
  • Seek urgent review if you develop pain, redness, discharge, or blurred vision after swimming.
