Swimming after LASIK should be avoided for a short period because pools, hot tubs, and open water carry infection risks and can irritate healing eyes. Once the surface has recovered, you can return gradually with protection.
Early Restrictions
The first phase focuses on keeping water out of the eyes.
- Swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the sea are usually avoided for at least 2 weeks or as advised by your clinic.
- Even in the shower, try to prevent water and shampoo from running directly into your eyes.
- Do not open your eyes under water during the early recovery period.
- Use the prescribed drops exactly as directed to reduce infection and inflammation risk.
Safe Return to Water
Once your surgeon confirms healing, you can reintroduce swimming.
- Start with short sessions in clean, chlorinated pools while wearing well‑fitting swimming goggles.
- Open‑water swimming can usually resume later, again with eye protection.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes after coming out of the water; instead, rinse gently with artificial tears if needed.
- Seek review promptly if you develop redness, pain, discharge, or sudden visual changes after swimming.
