You can usually shower soon after xanthelasma removal surgery, but you must keep soap, shampoo, and direct water away from the treated eyelid skin.
Early showering precautions
The healing area is delicate and easily irritated. Gentle washing keeps you clean while reducing infection risk and protecting new skin.
- Shower with your back to the water whenever possible
- Avoid direct spray onto your face and eyes
- Do not rub or pick at any scabs or crusts
- Pat around the eyelids dry with a clean towel instead of wiping
- Avoid eye make-up until your clinician confirms it is safe
Returning to normal washing
As redness and tenderness settle, you can gradually relax these precautions. Your team will guide you on timing and scar care.
- Normal gentle showering is often possible after about one week
- Continue to avoid vigorous rubbing or harsh products on the treated area
- Use mild cleansers and moisturisers on healed skin if recommended
- Delay swimming pools and hot tubs until fully cleared
- Contact the clinic if redness, discharge, or pain increase after showering
