Can I exercise after selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT)?

< 1 min read

Light exercise is usually safe soon after SLT. Most people can walk the same day, but intense workouts should wait briefly.

Early activity

For the first twenty-four hours, it is sensible to keep movements gentle. This allows the eye to settle after the laser and any pressure-lowering drops.

  • Walking and easy stretching are typically fine.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous gym sessions immediately after treatment.
  • Do not rub or press on your eye during or after exercise.
  • Use sunglasses outdoors if light sensitivity persists.
  • Stay well hydrated, especially if taking diuretic tablets.

Building up to full exercise

Most people resume normal routines within a few days. Your clinician may tailor advice based on your glaucoma status and general health.

  • Increase intensity gradually while monitoring for pain or blurred vision.
  • Contact sports may require extra caution to avoid eye trauma.
  • Protective eyewear is sensible for racquet or ball sports.
  • Stop and seek urgent help if you notice haloes, severe ache, or sudden vision loss.
  • Discuss specific fitness goals at your follow-up appointment.
