Light exercise is encouraged after MIGS, but strenuous activities should wait until the eye has healed. Your surgeon will usually advise avoiding heavy exertion for at least one to two weeks.
Early movement
Gentle movement helps circulation and wellbeing without straining the eye. The key is to move your body while keeping pressure changes low.
- Short walks around the house or outside are usually fine.
- Avoid bending deeply, heavy lifting, or vigorous gym sessions.
- Do not rub or press on the eye during or after activity.
- Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect from wind and dust.
- Stop if you feel throbbing, pain, or sudden blur.
Building back to full exercise
Most people can gradually increase activity over a few weeks. Timings vary depending on the exact MIGS procedure and any combined cataract surgery.
- Reintroduce low-impact exercise like static cycling or gentle yoga first.
- Delay high-impact sports and contact activities until cleared by your surgeon.
- Protective eyewear is sensible for racquet or ball sports.
- Stay hydrated and follow your drop schedule around workouts.
- Report any new floaters, haloes, or loss of vision immediately.
