Exercise after external DCR surgery should restart gradually, as straining too soon can increase bleeding or swelling.
Gentle activity in the early phase
Light movement supports overall health but must not disturb the nose and tear duct area. Take things slowly and listen to your body.
- Short walks are usually safe within a day or two
- Avoid heavy lifting, bending, or high-intensity exercise initially
- Do not blow your nose hard after activity
- Stop immediately if you feel throbbing or bleeding
- Follow your surgeon’s instructions on specific restrictions
Building back to normal exercise
More vigorous sports can resume once bruising and tenderness settle and your clinician is satisfied with healing.
- Discuss gym work, running, and cycling at your follow-up visit
- Delay contact sports or activities with facial risk until cleared
- Increase intensity over several sessions rather than in one go
- Consider protective eyewear or headgear if appropriate
- Seek review if exercise triggers persistent pain, swelling, or blurred vision
