Eye drops do not last forever, and using them after they expire can increase infection risk or reduce effectiveness.
General rules for discarding drops
Most bottles have both an expiry date and a recommended period after opening. Once opened, the contents gradually lose sterility, even with preservatives.
- Check the label for “discard X days after opening” guidance
- Many preserved bottles should be thrown away after 28 days
- Single-use vials are for one day only, even if some liquid remains
- Never use drops past the printed expiry date on the box or bottle
Safe storage and handling
Proper handling keeps drops effective for as long as intended. This is especially important for medicated drops used after surgery or for glaucoma.
- Store as directed, often at room temperature and away from direct sunlight
- Avoid touching the tip to the eye, lashes, or fingers
- Write the opening date on the bottle as a reminder
- Dispose of unused prescriptions safely, following pharmacy advice
