When should I replace contact lenses?

< 1 min read

Contact lenses must be replaced according to the schedule recommended for their specific design, regardless of how comfortable they feel. Over‑wear increases the risk of complications.

Replacement Schedules

Daily disposable lenses are thrown away after a single day’s wear, while planned replacement lenses are typically changed weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. Rigid gas‑permeable lenses often last longer but still require periodic replacement based on wear and condition.

  • Never extend wear beyond the stated period to economise
  • Keep a record or use reminders to track replacement dates
  • Damaged or torn lenses should be discarded immediately
  • Cases also require regular replacement, usually every one to three months

Why Timely Replacement Matters

Old lenses accumulate deposits and may lose shape or oxygen permeability, leading to discomfort, inflammation, or infection. Sticking to the schedule is as important as good cleaning technique.

  • Discuss any recurrent discomfort near the end of the wearing cycle with your practitioner
  • Consider daily disposables if you struggle to maintain cleaning routines
  • Do not attempt to repair or reuse compromised lenses
  • Report persistent redness or pain promptly, even with new lenses
