What are scleral lenses?

< 1 min read

Scleral lenses are large diameter rigid lenses that vault over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye (sclera). They create a fluid reservoir between the lens and cornea, offering both optical and therapeutic benefits.

Uses and Advantages

These lenses provide excellent vision and comfort for people with severely irregular corneas, keratoconus, or ocular surface disease. The fluid layer can protect the cornea and relieve symptoms in severe dry eye.

  • Custom‑designed for each eye using detailed measurements or imaging
  • Stable on the eye with little movement, making them suitable for many activities
  • Require filling with sterile saline before insertion
  • Cleaning and disinfection regimens are more involved than with standard soft lenses

Fitting and Care

Scleral fitting is specialist and may require several visits to optimise comfort and vision. Ongoing follow‑up monitors corneal health and lens performance.

  • Insertion and removal techniques need training and practice
  • Suitable solutions and filling fluids must be used to avoid toxicity
  • Regular reviews are essential, especially for therapeutic use
  • Patients should be counselled about realistic expectations and commitment
