What are photochromic lenses?

< 1 min read

Photochromic lenses automatically darken in response to ultraviolet light outdoors and return to clear indoors. They offer convenience by combining everyday spectacles with sun protection.

Features

The lens material contains molecules that change structure when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, increasing tint density. The level of darkening depends on temperature, light intensity, and lens design.

  • Provide full ultraviolet protection when activated
  • Remain clear or only lightly tinted inside under most conditions
  • May darken less inside cars because windscreens block much ultraviolet light
  • Available in various base materials and can include other coatings

Suitability

Photochromic lenses suit people who move frequently between indoor and outdoor environments and prefer not to swap between ordinary spectacles and sunglasses. Some still choose dedicated sunglasses for very bright conditions or driving.

  • Adaptation times vary between products and temperatures
  • Discuss occupational needs, especially for drivers or pilots
  • Children and post-surgical patients can benefit from the added convenience and protection
  • Regular cleaning and care are the same as for other coated lenses
