Toric lenses

< 1 min read

Toric lenses are intraocular lens implants that correct astigmatism as well as short or long sight, giving sharper vision after cataract or lens replacement surgery.

Why toric lenses are helpful

Astigmatism occurs when the eye’s focusing surface is more curved in one direction than another, causing blur and ghosting. Standard lenses do not fully correct this, so glasses are still needed.

  • Toric implants have different powers in different meridians to balance astigmatism
  • They are aligned to a specific angle inside the eye during surgery
  • Can significantly reduce the need for glasses for distance vision
  • Available in monofocal, multifocal, and EDOF designs

Considerations and follow up

Accurate measurements and careful positioning are essential for toric lenses to work well. After surgery, the implant is checked to ensure it has not rotated from its intended alignment.

  • Small adjustments in glasses prescription may still be needed for fine tasks
  • Occasionally, rotation or residual astigmatism requires further correction
  • Discuss hobbies like night driving or detailed craft when choosing lens type
  • Regular eye tests continue to monitor long term health and clarity
