COVID-19 can affect the eyes in several ways, although many people have no eye symptoms at all.
Possible eye symptoms with COVID
Some patients develop conjunctivitis, often called pink eye, during infection. This may appear with or without typical respiratory symptoms.
- Red, watery eyes with mild soreness or irritation
- Light sensitivity or gritty feeling in some cases
- Usually affects both eyes but can be one-sided
- Symptoms often settle as general health improves
Eye safety during and after infection
Good hygiene and careful lens use help protect your eyes and others. Rarely, blood-clot complications or inflammation may affect the eyes and need urgent care.
- Wash hands regularly and avoid touching or rubbing eyes
- Do not share towels, cosmetics, or drops
- Seek urgent assessment for sudden vision loss, pain, or double vision
- Discuss any new persistent eye symptoms with your clinician after COVID
