Most eye injuries can be reduced or avoided through simple precautions at home, work, and during sport. Protecting your eyes helps preserve long-term vision.
Everyday Precautions
Use appropriate safety glasses when doing DIY, gardening, or handling chemicals, and keep cleaning products out of children’s reach. Take care with sharp objects, fireworks, and projectiles such as elastic bands or toys.
- Wear protective eyewear when drilling, hammering, or using power tools
- Follow instructions and keep a safe distance when using fireworks
- Store household chemicals securely and avoid decanting into unlabelled containers
- Supervise children around projectiles and sports equipment
When Injury Occurs
If something enters the eye, avoid rubbing and seek medical advice promptly, especially if pain, vision changes, or persistent discomfort occur. Chemical splashes should be rinsed immediately with plenty of clean water while arranging urgent assessment.
- Do not attempt to remove embedded objects yourself
- Use a rigid shield, not a patch, if there is suspected penetration
- Contact emergency services for severe trauma or sudden vision loss
- Regular eye examinations can also pick up damage from chronic low-level exposure
