How do allergies affect eyes?

< 1 min read

Allergies can cause itchy, red, watery eyes and swollen lids, commonly known as allergic conjunctivitis. Symptoms often flare during particular seasons or after exposure to specific triggers.

Symptoms and Triggers

Typical features include intense itching, burning, tearing, and stringy discharge, often in both eyes. Pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and some cosmetic or contact lens solutions are frequent culprits.

  • Rubbing the eyes may worsen inflammation and risk corneal damage
  • Allergic symptoms often accompany nasal congestion or sneezing
  • Contact lens wear can become uncomfortable during flare-ups
  • Severe or persistent cases may involve more complex allergic eye disease

Management

Treatment focuses on avoiding triggers where possible, using cold compresses, and applying prescribed anti-allergy drops or oral medication. Lubricating drops can help dilute allergens and soothe the surface.

  • Start prophylactic drops before the usual allergy season if advised
  • Consider daily disposable contact lenses or temporary spectacle wear during flares
  • Seek urgent care if pain, marked light sensitivity, or vision loss occurs
  • Allergy testing and specialist referral may be needed for difficult cases
