Can I use eye drops with contacts?

< 1 min read

Some eye drops are safe to use with contact lenses in place, while others must only be applied when lenses are removed. Checking compatibility is important to avoid damaging lenses or irritating the eyes.

Which Drops Are Suitable

Rewetting drops and certain lubricants are specifically formulated for contact lens wear and state this on the packaging. Many medicated drops, oily preparations, or preserved products are not intended for use over lenses.

  • When in doubt, remove lenses before applying drops
  • Medicated drops for infection or inflammation usually require lenses to be left out
  • Preservatives can sometimes bind to soft lenses and prolong exposure
  • Hydrogen peroxide solutions must never be used directly in the eye

Safe Practice

If drops need to be applied while wearing lenses, follow your practitioner’s specific recommendations. Otherwise, remove lenses, instil the drop, wait the advised period, and then reinsert if permitted.

  • Have suitable spectacles available for periods when lenses must be removed
  • Inform clinicians that you wear lenses when they prescribe drops
  • Stop lens wear and seek advice if you develop redness, pain, or blurred vision
  • Do not use over‑the‑counter whitening drops with lenses unless explicitly approved
