Near vision testing measures how clearly a person can see at close distances used for reading and other near tasks. It complements distance visual acuity measurement.
Procedure
Standard near charts with text or symbols of varying sizes are held at a specified distance, typically around 35-40 centimetres. Each eye is tested separately and then together, with current near correction in place when appropriate.
- Records the smallest print size that can be read comfortably
- Often noted in N notation or equivalent Snellen fractions
- Testing distance should be consistent and documented
- Illumination is kept at typical reading levels
Clinical Role
Near vision testing helps assess presbyopia, monitor low vision, and evaluate the impact of ocular disease on everyday tasks. It also guides prescription of reading glasses, bifocals, or multifocals.
- Important in planning visual aids and rehabilitation
- Changes may signal progression of lens or macular disease
- Testing under habitual conditions reflects real-world performance
- Results are interpreted alongside distance acuity and refraction
