What is confrontation visual field test?

< 1 min read

A confrontation visual field test is a quick check of your side vision at the clinic chair.

How confrontation field testing is done

The examiner sits facing you and asks you to cover one eye. While you look at their nose, they move fingers or a small target from the side to see when you first notice it.

  • Each eye is tested separately to compare side vision
  • You simply say when you see the moving fingers or target
  • The test is brief and requires no special equipment
  • It can be performed even if you are unwell or in hospital

Why this test is important

Although basic, this test can reveal large gaps in the visual field. Such defects may point to eye disease, stroke, or brain problems needing further detailed testing.

  • Helps detect major field loss from glaucoma or retinal conditions
  • Useful as a screening tool in emergency and routine clinics
  • Abnormal results usually lead to automated visual field testing
  • Supports safe decisions about driving and daily activities
