How OCT Scans Help Prevent Macular Oedema After Surgery

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is central to how we prevent and detect CMO at Blue Fin Vision®. Pre-operatively, OCT can reveal subtle epiretinal membrane, diabetic macular thickening or other pathology that may not be obvious on examination alone.¹

Identifying these issues allows us to classify risk, plan counselling and tailor anti-inflammatory regimens. After surgery, OCT detects small increases in macular thickness before patients notice blurred vision. This early warning lets us extend or intensify steroid–NSAID therapy to stabilise the retina.

Studies show that many more eyes develop subclinical OCT changes than symptomatic CMO, so monitoring matters even when vision seems good.²

We perform macular OCT on every cataract and lens replacement patient before and after surgery, not just those labelled “high-risk”. This universal approach supports safety, outcome auditing and our wider transparency commitments.
