< 1 min read

Thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune condition in which inflammation and swelling occur in the tissues around the eyes, often in association with thyroid dysfunction. It can affect eyelid position, eye prominence and eye movements.

Typical manifestations

Symptoms may include redness, grittiness, eyelid retraction, bulging eyes and double vision. In more severe cases the optic nerve can be compressed, threatening vision.

  • Often linked with Graves’ disease but can occur with other thyroid problems
  • Smoking increases the risk and severity of thyroid eye disease
  • Treatment focuses on controlling inflammation and protecting the eye surface
  • Surgery may be considered once the condition has become stable
