Ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelid that partially covers the pupil. It can reduce the field of vision and affect the symmetry of the eyes.
Causes and symptoms
Ptosis may be present from birth or develop later due to ageing of the levator muscle, previous surgery, contact lens wear or neurological conditions. People often notice needing to raise their brows or tilt the head back to see clearly.
- Can affect one or both eyes
- Severity ranges from mild droop to almost complete closure
- Assessment includes eyelid measurements and checking eye movements
- Surgical correction aims to restore a natural lid height and contour
