A giant retinal tear is a very large break in the retina that extends around a significant portion of its circumference. It is a serious condition that carries a high risk of retinal detachment.
Features of giant retinal tears
These tears often occur in eyes with pre-existing risk factors such as high myopia, hereditary vitreoretinal disorders or previous surgery. The retina may fold or roll, and vision can deteriorate quickly if the macula becomes involved.
- Urgent specialist assessment and surgery are usually required
- Vitrectomy with heavy liquids, laser and tamponade is commonly used
- There is a risk of recurrence, so close follow-up is essential
- The final visual outcome depends on macular involvement and timing of repair
