An epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a thin layer of scar-like tissue that forms on the surface of the macula. It can contract and cause the retina to wrinkle, leading to distortion and blurred central vision.
Symptoms and progression
People may notice straight lines appearing wavy, difficulty reading or differences in image size between the two eyes. Many membranes remain stable, while others gradually thicken and have a greater impact on vision.
- Often detected on retinal scans during routine eye checks
- Can develop after posterior vitreous detachment, surgery or inflammation
- Mild cases may simply be monitored over time
- More significant membranes can be peeled during vitrectomy surgery
