Entropion is an inward turning of the eyelid margin, causing the lashes to rub against the eye surface. This friction can be painful and may damage the cornea.
Why entropion occurs
Age-related loosening of the eyelid, scarring or muscle imbalance can all cause the lid to roll inwards. Symptoms include irritation, watering, redness and a feeling that something is in the eye.
- Lubricants and temporary taping may provide short-term relief
- Definitive treatment is usually surgical correction of the lid position
- Prompt management helps prevent corneal ulcers or infection
- Both eyes can be affected, sometimes at different times
