What is dermatochalasis?

< 1 min read

Dermatochalasis is excess, loose eyelid skin that can hang over the lashes. It is particularly common in the upper lids and may affect appearance or field of vision.

Effects on the eyes

People may notice heaviness, brow strain or difficulty seeing upwards or to the sides. The skin can rest on the lashes, sometimes causing irritation or making it harder to keep the lids clean.

  • Often age-related but may run in families
  • Can coexist with droopy brows or true ptosis
  • Visual field testing can show how much the skin obstructs sight
  • Upper lid blepharoplasty can remove or reshape the excess tissue
