What is chalazion?

< 1 min read

A chalazion is a firm, painless or mildly tender lump in the eyelid caused by blockage of a Meibomian oil gland. It may follow or coexist with an inflamed stye.

How chalazia develop

Oil becomes trapped within the gland and surrounding tissue, leading to a slow-growing cyst. Small chalazia often settle with warm compresses and lid care, while larger or persistent ones may need a minor procedure.

  • More common in people with blepharitis or oily skin
  • Usually not related to cancer, but recurrent lesions should be assessed
  • Warm compresses and gentle massage help drainage
  • Surgical drainage can be performed from the inside of the lid if needed
