What is bacterial conjunctivitis?

< 1 min read

Bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, or Haemophilus species. It is common in both children and adults.

Symptoms

Typical features include red eyes, sticky yellow or green discharge, and eyelids that feel glued together on waking. One or both eyes may be affected.

  • Vision is usually only slightly blurred and clears with blinking
  • Discomfort is often described as gritty rather than severe pain
  • Contagious but generally less so than viral forms

Treatment

Topical antibiotic drops or ointment are commonly prescribed to speed resolution and reduce transmission. Lubricants and lid hygiene improve comfort.
