Retinoschisis is a splitting of the retinal layers, creating a pocket of fluid-filled separation. It may be degenerative or inherited and is often detected incidentally.
Types and symptoms
Peripheral degenerative retinoschisis usually causes few or no symptoms.
- Shallow, smooth elevation of retina seen on examination
- Occasional peripheral field defects but preserved central vision
- X-linked juvenile forms present in boys with reduced vision from childhood
- OCT imaging helps distinguish schisis from retinal detachment
Management
Treatment depends on type and risk of progression.
- Observation for stable peripheral degenerative cases
- Laser or surgery if associated with retinal breaks and detachment risk
- Genetic counselling and low-vision support in inherited forms
- Regular monitoring for any change in symptoms or examination findings
