Posterior capsular opacification PCO is a common cause of cloudy vision months or years after cataract surgery. It occurs when the thin membrane behind the implant becomes hazy.
Symptoms and cause
PCO is sometimes called a “secondary cataract”, although the original lens has already been removed.
- Gradual blur, glare, and halo around lights similar to the original cataract
- Caused by leftover lens cells thickening and wrinkling the capsule
- Does not usually cause pain or redness
- Detected easily during a slit-lamp examination
Treatment
A quick laser procedure can restore clarity in most cases. Vision often improves rapidly.
- YAG laser capsulotomy creates a small opening in the hazy capsule
- Usually done in clinic with drops and no need for stitches
- Risks are low but include temporary pressure rise and floaters
- Most patients notice clearer, brighter vision within days
