Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory facial rash around the mouth and sometimes the nose and eyes. It is relevant to eye care when it involves the periocular area or topical steroids are used.
Features and triggers
The rash consists of small papules and pustules on an erythematous base.
- Often spares a narrow strip of skin next to the vermilion border
- Triggered or worsened by topical steroids, heavy cosmetics, or fluorinated toothpaste
- Can extend to eyelids, causing irritation and swelling
- More common in young women
Management
Treatment aims to remove triggers and use appropriate medication.
- Gradual withdrawal of topical steroids and irritant products
- Topical or oral antibiotics such as metronidazole or tetracyclines
- Ophthalmic review if eyelids and ocular surface are involved
- Patient education on gentle skin care and relapse prevention
