Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome is a rare condition characterised by recurrent facial swelling, facial nerve palsy, and a fissured tongue. Eyelid and orbital tissues may be involved.
Ocular and facial features
The classic triad may not be present in every patient.
- Recurrent painless swelling of the lips or eyelids
- Episodes of facial nerve weakness causing lagophthalmos
- Furrowed or fissured tongue glossitis
- Granulomatous inflammation on biopsy
Management
Treatment is often symptomatic and tailored.
- Corticosteroids or other immunomodulators for acute flares
- Lid surgery or gold weights if exposure threatens the cornea
- Speech and dietary advice for tongue involvement
- Multidisciplinary care with neurology and dermatology
