Esotropia

< 1 min read

Esotropia is a form of strabismus where one or both eyes turn inward. It can appear in infancy, early childhood, or adulthood.

Symptoms and types

Impact varies with age of onset.

  • Constant inward deviation in infantile esotropia
  • Accommodative esotropia linked to long-sightedness and focusing effort
  • Double vision in older children and adults with acquired esotropia
  • Risk of amblyopia and loss of depth perception if untreated

Management

Treatment aims to align the eyes and support binocular vision.

  • Glasses to correct hyperopia and relieve accommodative strain
  • Patching or atropine penalisation for amblyopia
  • Strabismus surgery when significant misalignment persists
  • Long-term follow-up to monitor alignment and visual development
