Convergence insufficiency

< 1 min read

Convergence insufficiency is difficulty turning both eyes inwards together for near tasks. It can cause eye strain and double vision when reading.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Problems often arise during prolonged close work.

  • Headache, blurred or double vision, and loss of place when reading
  • Words appearing to move or swim on the page
  • Near point of convergence is remote on examination
  • Symptoms improve when covering one eye

Treatment

Most cases respond well to targeted exercises.

  • Home or office-based convergence exercises and pencil push-ups
  • Prism reading glasses in selected patients
  • Addressing any underlying refractive error or general fatigue
  • Regular review to monitor progress and adjust therapy
