Conjunctival cyst

< 1 min read

A conjunctival cyst is a thin-walled, fluid-filled sac on the surface of the eye or inside the eyelid. Most are benign and cause only minor irritation.

Symptoms and causes

Cysts may be congenital or arise after inflammation or surgery.

  • Clear or slightly opaque bubble visible on the conjunctiva
  • Foreign-body sensation, tearing, or cosmetic concern
  • Occasionally linked to prior trauma, surgery, or chronic conjunctivitis
  • Usually non-painful and not affecting vision

Treatment

Small asymptomatic cysts can simply be observed.

  • Lubricating drops for mild irritation
  • Needle drainage or surgical excision if bothersome or recurrent
  • Histopathology in atypical or solid lesions to exclude tumours
  • Follow-up to monitor for recurrence after removal
