Rigid contact lenses play a key role in managing keratoconus by providing a smooth front surface for the eye, which can dramatically improve visual clarity. They do not cure or halt the disease but offer excellent optical correction.
Why Rigid Lenses Work
Unlike soft lenses, rigid gas-permeable and scleral lenses hold their shape on the eye. The tear film fills the space between the lens and the irregular cornea, creating an optically regular surface.
- Often give much sharper vision than glasses in moderate to advanced keratoconus
- Available in many designs tailored to different cone shapes
- Require expert fitting and regular review
Types of Lenses
Options include corneal RGP lenses, larger semi-scleral designs, and full scleral lenses that vault the cornea completely. The best choice depends on corneal shape, disease stage, and patient comfort.
Combination with Other Treatments
Many patients have corneal cross-linking to stabilise the condition and then use rigid or scleral lenses for long-term visual correction.
