Blepharitis

< 1 min read

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid margins that often causes burning, grittiness, and crusting. It commonly co-exists with dry eye and meibomian gland problems.

Symptoms and types

The condition can be anterior, affecting lash roots, or posterior, involving oil glands along the lid margin.

  • Red, itchy eyelids with flakes or crusts at the lashes
  • Gritty, dry, or sticky eyes, especially on waking
  • Frequent styes or chalazia in some people
  • Associated rosacea or seborrhoeic dermatitis in many cases

Management

Blepharitis is usually a long-term condition managed rather than cured. Daily routines are the foundation of control.

  • Warm compresses and lid cleaning to clear debris and oils
  • Lubricating drops to relieve dryness and irritation
  • Occasional antibiotic or anti-inflammatory treatments during flares
  • Regular review for contact lens wearers or those with recurrent infections
