Aphakia is the absence of the natural crystalline lens from the eye. It most often follows cataract extraction without implantation of an intraocular lens, or lens loss after trauma.
Visual consequences
Without the lens, the eye loses a major part of its focusing power.
- High hyperopia and reduced ability to focus at different distances
- Image distortion and aniseikonia if only one eye is aphakic
- Increased light sensitivity and chromatic aberration
- Risk of retinal detachment and glaucoma in some causes
Correction and management
Several options restore focus and comfort.
- Intraocular lens implantation primary or secondary when possible
- High-plus glasses or contact lenses in eyes without an implant
- Regular monitoring for retinal or pressure-related complications
- Visual rehabilitation and amblyopia management in children
