Glaucoma Treatment at Blue Fin Vision®

Private Glaucoma Care in London, Hertfordshire & Essex

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure within the eye.

Without treatment, glaucoma causes progressive, irreversible vision loss – typically starting with peripheral vision and advancing silently until significant damage has occurred.

Blue Fin Vision® provides consultant-led glaucoma diagnostics, monitoring and treatment across London, Hertfordshire and Essex. Early detection and effective pressure control are essential to preserving your sight.

NHS glaucoma care includes free screening for those over 40 or at higher risk, but specialist referrals and treatments like SLT or MIGS often face 18-week waits. Private management at Blue Fin Vision® offers immediate consultant access and faster monitoring.

Our lead consultant has performed over 55,000 eye procedures with complication rates three to five times below UK averages (independently audited through the National Ophthalmology Database).

Early Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma often causes no symptoms until vision loss has occurred. Warning signs to watch for include:

  • Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain or redness
  • Halos around lights
  • Difficulty adjusting to low light

If you experience any of these symptoms, or have risk factors such as family history, high eye pressure, or are over 40, prompt assessment is recommended.

Do You Need Glaucoma Treatment?

You may benefit from glaucoma assessment or treatment if you have:

  • Raised intraocular pressure (ocular hypertension)
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Previous diagnosis requiring monitoring or treatment adjustment
  • Difficulty tolerating glaucoma eye drops
  • Glaucoma not adequately controlled with drops alone
  • Preference for laser treatment over long-term drops

Your consultant will assess your eye pressure, optic nerve health and visual field to determine the most appropriate management.

What Happens Next

  1. Comprehensive assessment: Your consultant conducts a thorough examination including pressure measurement, OCT imaging and visual field testing
  2. Diagnosis and staging: We determine the type and severity of your glaucoma
  3. Personalised treatment plan: A tailored strategy to control pressure and protect your vision
  4. Ongoing monitoring: Regular follow-ups ensure your treatment remains effective

Glaucoma Diagnostics

Early detection is essential. Blue Fin Vision® uses advanced diagnostic equipment including:

  • Comprehensive eye examination
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement
  • Visual field (HVF) testing
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of the optic nerve
  • Pachymetry (corneal thickness measurement)
  • Gonioscopy (drainage angle assessment)

Regular monitoring tracks any progression and ensures your treatment remains appropriate.

Treatment Options

Blue Fin Vision® offers a full range of glaucoma treatments tailored to your type and stage of disease.

Eye Drops

Often the first line of treatment. Drops lower intraocular pressure by reducing fluid production or improving drainage. Your consultant will prescribe the most appropriate medication based on your pressure levels, tolerance and lifestyle.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

SLT uses targeted laser energy to improve fluid drainage from the eye. This treatment:

  • Takes 5-10 minutes per eye
  • Is painless and performed as an outpatient
  • Can reduce or eliminate the need for daily drops
  • May be repeated if needed
  • Is often recommended as first-line treatment or when drops cause side effects

YAG Laser Iridotomy

For narrow-angle or angle-closure glaucoma, YAG laser creates a small opening in the iris to improve fluid drainage and prevent acute pressure spikes.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)

For patients needing additional intervention, MIGS procedures offer effective pressure reduction with faster recovery than traditional glaucoma surgery. MIGS can often be combined with cataract surgery for patients requiring both.

Oral Medications

In some cases, oral medications may complement drops to achieve adequate pressure control.

What to Expect

Before Treatment

Your consultation includes full glaucoma assessment – pressure measurement, optic nerve imaging, visual field testing and drainage angle evaluation. Your consultant explains your diagnosis, treatment options and expected outcomes. Formal consent follows GMC guidelines.

During Treatment

  • Eye drops: Prescribed with clear instructions on use and follow-up schedule
  • SLT laser: 5-10 minutes, anaesthetic drops only, return home immediately
  • YAG iridotomy: Quick outpatient procedure, mild discomfort only
  • MIGS: Day-case surgery under local anaesthetic, often combined with cataract surgery

After Treatment

  • Follow-up appointments to check pressure response
  • Ongoing monitoring at intervals appropriate to your condition
  • Adjustment of treatment if needed
