Does poor posture affect eyes?

< 1 min read

Poor posture does not damage the eyes directly but can worsen eye strain and headaches.

How posture links to eye discomfort

Slouching or leaning close to screens makes the eyes work harder to focus. Neck and shoulder tension can also increase the feeling of tired, heavy eyes.

  • Sitting too close to screens reduces blink rate and dries the surface
  • Looking up or down sharply for long periods strains the muscles
  • Glare and reflections are worse if the screen angle is poor
  • Incorrect chair height can encourage awkward head positions

Improving posture for comfortable vision

Small adjustments to your set-up often reduce discomfort. Combining good posture with regular breaks protects both eyes and muscles.

  • Keep screens at arm’s length with the top at or slightly below eye level
  • Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds
  • Ensure your chair supports an upright, relaxed position
  • Ask about computer glasses if near work remains uncomfortable
