Exercise after orbital decompression surgery must restart very gradually, because straining too soon can increase swelling, bleeding, and pressure around the eyes.
Gentle movement in the early phase
Short walks are often encouraged to reduce stiffness and blood clot risk. However, the eye sockets and sinuses need time to heal.
- Avoid heavy lifting, bending, or high-intensity workouts initially
- Do not blow your nose hard after activity
- Stop immediately if you feel throbbing, pressure, or fresh bleeding
- Follow your surgeon’s personalised restrictions closely
- Rest with your head slightly elevated if swelling increases
Building back towards normal exercise
More vigorous sport can resume only when your surgeon is confident that healing is secure.
- Discuss gym work, running, and cycling at follow-up visits
- Delay contact sports or activities with risk of facial injury until fully cleared
- Increase intensity over several sessions rather than in one leap
- Consider protective eyewear or headgear if appropriate
- Seek review if exercise leads to persistent pain, double vision, or swelling
