Can I swim after selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT)?

< 1 min read

Swimming after SLT should usually be delayed for a short time. This reduces infection risk and avoids irritating the treated eye while it settles.

First days after SLT

The eye may feel slightly sore or sensitive. Pool water, hot tubs, and open water contain chemicals and germs that can aggravate symptoms.

  • Avoid swimming for at least several days, or as your specialist advises.
  • Keep soapy bath water and shower spray away from your eyes.
  • Use prescribed drops regularly to support healing and pressure control.
  • Do not rub your eyes even if they feel itchy.
  • Seek urgent review if you notice marked redness, pain, or sudden vision changes.

Returning to the pool safely

Once your clinician is happy with recovery, you can usually return to swimming. Taking simple precautions keeps the eye comfortable.

  • Start with short, gentle sessions in clean, well-maintained pools.
  • Wear snug swimming goggles to shield your eyes from water and chemicals.
  • Rinse with preservative-free lubricating drops after swimming.
  • Avoid diving or vigorous water sports until you feel fully confident.
  • Continue regular glaucoma monitoring even when you feel well.
