Anisometropia means there is a significant difference in refractive error between the two eyes. This can make it harder for the brain to combine images into a single, comfortable view.
Consequences
In children, untreated anisometropia can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye) because one eye is consistently out of focus. In adults, it may cause eye strain, headaches, or double vision, especially after cataract or lens surgery if the eyes are left with very different prescriptions.
- May be present from childhood or acquired later
- Even moderate differences can cause symptoms
- Careful refraction and balance between the eyes is important
Treatment
Management includes tailored glasses or contact lenses to equalise focus, and in some cases refractive or lens surgery to reduce the difference.
