Did you know that 85% of British workers’ waking hours begin with them staring at screens according to Optegra?

Optegra’s recent research was based on people at home, in the office or on their commute.

With this worrying result, people are putting themselves at risk of experiencing health consequences such as headaches and blurred vision.

However, there are three tips you can use from today for healthier eyes.

1. Take a break from your screen

Spending a lot of time glued to your screen can lead to severe eye strain as well as disrupting your sleep cycle. The blue light that is emitted from your computer screens suppresses the production of melatonin (the hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles which tells you when it is time to sleep and wake up). Click here to find out more about what the sleep-wake cycle is.

It is important to consider your eyes by giving them the rest that they need. Therefore, your sleep quality should be a priority. Giving yourself breaks away from a screen can have a great impact on your eye health.

2. Have good contact lens hygiene

An interesting discovery by Optegra also discovered that more than 82% of people who wear contact lenses in the UK have bad contact lens hygiene. Many of these bad habits have come from people using someone else’s lenses as well as wearing the same pair of lenses for a long period of time. Bad contact lens hygiene can lead to severe discomfort of your eyes and also serious infections which are best to avoid.

If you are a contact lens wearer, then you should make sure to avoid the following:

  • Swimming with contact lenses
  • Showering with contact lenses
  • Sleeping with contact lenses
  • Playing water sports with your contact lenses

In addition to this, if you find that you have dropped your contact lens, clean them with clean hands.

3. Get regular eye tests done

It is best to not wait for the discomfort to come especially when you discover any issue with your eyes. They can be identified earlier on with regular tests with your doctor. We recommend that you get your eyes tested regularly to make sure they are healthy.

There you have it. Don’t wait for it to develop into a problem – get them tested regularly.
