# What is tarsorrhaphy surgery?

Tarsorrhaphy is a procedure where part of the eyelids is temporarily or permanently stitched together to narrow the opening and protect the eye surface.

## Why tarsorrhaphy is done

When the eyelids cannot close fully, the cornea can dry and ulcerate. Reducing the gap helps maintain moisture and shielding.

- Used in facial nerve palsy, severe dry eye, or non-healing corneal ulcers
- Can be partial, usually at the outer or inner corner
- May be reversible, with stitches later removed or loosened
- Often combined with lubricants, moisture goggles, or other treatments

## Effects on appearance and vision

The narrowed opening can affect field of view and cosmetic appearance. These factors are discussed in advance.

- Central vision is usually preserved if the middle opening remains
- Some patients notice reduced peripheral vision on the affected side
- Cosmetic options and future reversal are planned case by case
- Main goal is to preserve the cornea and prevent painful damage
