# What is epi-LASIK eye surgery?

Epi-LASIK is another surface laser technique in which a mechanical epikeratome separates a thin sheet of epithelium without alcohol. It aims to combine advantages of PRK and LASEK while avoiding chemical exposure.

## Procedure Overview

The epikeratome creates an epithelial flap that is lifted, the excimer laser reshapes the cornea, and the flap is repositioned. A bandage contact lens protects the eye during healing.

- May reduce epithelial toxicity compared with alcohol-assisted LASEK
- Healing and comfort are similar to other surface treatments
- No stromal flap leaves more biomechanical strength than LASIK
- Technique is less widely used than PRK or LASIK in many centres

## Outcomes

Visual results are generally comparable to other modern surface ablation methods when performed on suitable eyes. As with PRK and LASEK, recovery is slower than LASIK.

- Suitable for patients where flap complications must be minimised
- Regular post-operative reviews check epithelial integrity and clarity
- Long-term stability is similar to equivalent LASIK corrections
- Choice among surface procedures depends on surgeon preference and equipment
