# Is YAG laser iridotomy painful?

[YAG laser iridotomy](https://bluefinvision.com/blog/what-is-yag-laser-iridotomy/) can feel briefly sharp or uncomfortable, but most people tolerate it well. Numbing drops and sometimes a gel-filled contact lens reduce pain.

## Sensations during the laser

The laser makes a tiny opening in the coloured part of the eye. You may notice bright flashes of light and a clicking sound.

- Some patients feel a quick sting or jolt with individual laser shots
- Temporary ache or headache is fairly common
- The procedure usually takes only a few minutes per eye
- Extra laser can be spaced out if you find it uncomfortable

## Aftercare and discomfort

Eye ache, redness, and light sensitivity may last for several hours. These symptoms usually respond to drops and simple pain relief.

- Pressure is checked shortly afterwards and treated if raised
- Anti-inflammatory drops help ease tenderness
- Severe, persistent pain or sudden vision loss should be reported urgently
- Most people return to normal routines the following day
