# Does orbital decompression surgery hurt?

Orbital decompression surgery is a major operation, so some post-operative pain and discomfort are expected. However, strong anaesthesia prevents pain during the procedure itself.

## In theatre

You are under general anaesthetic while bone and sometimes fat are removed to create more space around the eye.

- You do not feel cutting or bone work during surgery
- Pain medicines are given before you wake to stay ahead of discomfort
- Dressings and eye ointment may cause a sensation of heaviness
- Staff closely monitor pain in recovery and adjust medication

## After surgery

Bruising, facial ache, and headache are common but usually manageable. Pain typically reduces over several days.

- Stronger painkillers are prescribed initially, then reduced as you improve
- Severe, worsening pain or new vision changes require urgent review
- Sleeping propped up and using cold compresses help comfort
- Most patients feel discomfort is acceptable given the improvement in pressure and appearance
